My family is a big fan of snacking and we dont always snack on the right kind of foods, we used to have an extra budget for crackers, cookies, dips, tortilla, potato chips and so many others. Other than myself, it seems no one in my house has weight problem; my husband and son are skinny no matter what they eat and my daughter has a healthy weight. I'm the only one who gains weight just by breathing, OK I'm exaggerating it must be the double ice cream and the huge glass of cold coke or the extra slash of cake and maybe just maybe the huge bag of chips I'm munching while writing, my sedentary life doesn't help to lose the extra pounds.
For a couple of months now we have been switching those extra fattening and unhealthy chips & dips for healthier versions, like: sweet potato, baked chips instead of fried, and some even more exotic things you can find in latino or asian markets. Most are delicious by the way but we don't actually have specialty stores or ethnic markets really close to home and most of my new snacks must come from: Walmart, Kroger or Whole Foods.
The last one is one of my favorite places to discover new flavors and treats, yet from time to time I got contacted by companies to try and test new yummy snacks, a couple of weeks ago I was contacted by
Saffron Road to review a new snack: "Crunchy Chickpeas", With my Latino background and my mom's Syrian blood I'm quite familiar with the chickpeas/gabanzos/kabuli/desi which are staple in my kitchen. This small legumes are high in protein and fiber and packed on potassium, iron, vitamin b-B6, magnesium and calcium.
I was sent the 2 newly released flavors: Korean BBQ and Chipotle. The Korean BBQ with an oriental sweet & mildly spicy traditional flavor. To achieve this, the chickpeas are seasoned with a mix of soy sauce, red pepper, garlic, pear juice and sesame oil. The Korean BBQ is designed to satisfy and please the most refined palates.
The Chipotle Crunchy Chickpeas, brings the Mexican food to the table with the smokey sweet flavor of dry jalapenos and it's a refreshing change to the traditional chips and dips. Both bags came in mild heat level which makes me think there are more options. These two new releases join the already available wasabi, Bombay spice and falafel options. Saffron Road Snacks are made with organic chickpeas, gluten free, non-GMO, antibiotic free and Ifanca Certificed..
The chickpeas are crunchy and satisfying, I love the food variety, the exotic mix of flavors and spices, plus I know i'm eating healthy while enjoying worldwide cuisine. I'm not the only one obsessed with the chickpeas my husband loves the Chipotle flavor ones (he has a thing for Mexican food) and I had to share the Korean BBQ with him too. The big surprise was to find out how good and easy the chickpeas were to mix and blend with regular food.
I ran out of croutons and needed something crunchy for texture in my salad, I had a bag of Chipotle Chickpeas on the counter and decided to try. The mixture of flavors was fantastic. Here is my recipe.
Chipotle Summer Salad (2 portions)
1 cup of shredded lettuce
1/2 cup of Shredded carrots
1/2 cup of cherry tomatoes quartered
1/2 cup of Chipotle flavored Saffron road Chickpeas.
2 Strawberries (garnish)
Dressing Balsamic Vinegar.
Just mix and serve, garnish with a strawberry slashed on top and dress up with balsamic vinegar.
You can purchase Saffron Road Crunchy Chickpeas: Chipotle or Korean BBQ at Whole food for only 4,99 (6oz pack)
