Sleeping is the main activity for young babies, a month old baby should sleep a minimum of 16 hours day while a 12 months needs at least 12 hours. If sleeping is such an important part of our younglings' lifes, spending money and time researching for amazing bedding and crib products should be in every parent's priority list. Of course some of us cannot spend fortunes on mattresses, pads or comforters, but instead spending time researching for quality and budget products. It is well invested time in your child's comfort.

As a mom of 2 and having raised my 2 nephews since they were born, I know now what I'm looking for my baby's crib, it doesn't matter if it's a mattress or a crib liner. Buying a mattress is not a decision parents should take lightly, a good mattress will not only last longer but also protect our children while they are most vulnerable. I have a couple of rules I follow when I'm in the market for a baby crib mattress. This is how I make the most of my money, I look for products that are:

Organic or at least Non-Toxic,
Ecological,
Must comply with the Federal flammability standards,
Firm,
Good fit,
Warranty,
and if it's possible waterproof.

With my oldest daughter, now 17 there weren't many options in the market, so we bought a Simmons, they were introducing a new line and we though it would be perfect. Well not so much, however the mattress was in good enough shape for my son to inherit it 3 years later. With my nephew Santiago now 8, we went for a  Serta, we thought it was good but he hated to sleep in the crib,  for Matias (5) we bought a Colgate and we still regret it. The Simmons mattress  was made into a dog bed, since my son  never really slept in a crib but co-sleep with us, until 3. The Serta didn't survive Santiago bouncing and jumping all around it lasted less than 2 years before we had to throw it away. The Colgate was too soft and it didn't offer a good support the baby's body, 2 months after, we bought a mattress pad and eventually the mattress lost it's shape and firmness.

After 3 different mattress, a insane obsession with soft mattresses and lots of lack or research; I had a couple of harsh lessons. First not long ago I came across a New Zealand Study that taught me mattress can emit dangerous gases and the principal causes: are non-organic, old or used  by another child mattresses and the chemicals used to give them their fire-retardant and waterproof qualities; of course it can be avoided by wrapping your mattress. Second always and I mean it always buy a firm mattress soft and cozy increases the suffocation hazard. Adult mattresses are to soft for babies, an easy way to figure out if a mattress is too soft for your baby is: lightly press the mattress (middle and edges)with  your  palm, it should pop back promptly and it shouldn't take the shape of your hand. The first 2 lessons are important for you to remember since both are closely linked to SIDS (or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Now with my 3rd pregnancy and after 4 children, I'm quite prepared and I've spent a good amount of time researching, I really wanted a Naturepedic Organic Mattress, I had invested long hours of research and this mattress seemed the best option in the market. So when I was offered the Lullaby Earth Lightweight Second Stage instead. I must say I was skeptical and a bit sad at first. After a couple of hours reading reviews and articles, I actually wanted to test this mattress badly and even more than I ever wanted the Naturepedic. The day the mattress showed up at my door  I was super excited and really impressed by how lightweight (only 7lb) this mattress is compared to all the other mattress my family has purchased in the past and it's seamless.

The firmness it's perfect. I tested and tried everywhere, the mattress is really firm for a baby, however I found out that Second stage means: a softer side for toddlers, which makes me  happy because this mattress will last for 3 years or so. While Lullaby Earth is not Organic, it's a great, fully Non Toxic option, it uses an innovative new Air-Core made of food grade low density polyethylene; avoiding all the toxic chemicals and allergens from the polyurethane and latex rubber. This has gained the company the GreenGuard Select Certification. The mattress is also made with Recyclable materials and while there are no programs for the size and shape, they are really proud to be leading the way toward this goal.

The mattress not only meets and exceeds all the federal flammability standards, but does it without all the chemical issues and emissions from the polyurethane foam, instead it uses PETE or polyethylene terephthalate, which is more flame resistant and has less harsh chemicals. Lullaby Earth also adds a "hydrated silica" as fire barrier; the same polyethylene it's used to make the mattress waterproof and baby safe. I have to mention that there is no chemical smell or smell at all coming from the mattress or its fabric.

The Lullaby Earth has perfect fit for most cribs and toddler beds (complying with  ASTM standards), with square edges instead of the usual round shaped corner mattresses; which allows a close-fitting in the corners. The LIFETIME limited warranty can be added to the list of perks of this mattress. It's made in USA which means you are not only purchasing a mattress but helping american workers to earn their salaries. The cherry on the top? The price of this mattress will not empty your bank account or max your credit card but will allow you and your baby sleep comfy, safe and without fears.

I guess I might have to sum it up and say: I'm going gaga for my baby's mattress because: it's lightweight, meets all the federal flammability standards and it's waterproof without toxic chemicals or allergens. The mattress fits my crib perfectly, has a lifetime limited warranty and don't forget one side is a bit more softer to help your toddler sleep more soundly. After 18 years testing and trying mattresses, it's a shame the Lullaby Earth wasn't available for all my 4 kids, at least my youngest will get to enjoy sleep comfortable, safely and deeply in her new mattress.

  40. Everything is made with a time frame in mind and after that period it expires. The same is the case with mattresses. Normally, good quality mattresses are made to last for a period of ten years or even longer. But after this duration, they become totally useless and ready to be thrown out. If you think your mattress has lived a longer life than expected, it's time to pay a mattress warehouse a visit. click here
