Since we found out we were pregnant, I been thinking about a nursery and I knew this time I wanted to have one, with my 2 older babies I was too young to care about it and I had hundreds of other important things on my mind: like school then college, cooking, work, friends, family, etc. When you are 15 and later 18, preparing your baby's nursery is not a priority and the money to put one together can be difficult to come by.

Now in my 30's. I want the whole experience, from picking the right colors to painting the walls, the perfect crib bedding, organizing the stuffed animals and picking the wall accessories. One of the hardest parts was to pick the right paint and the right color. My husband and I were looking for a green alternative to the usual paint companies for our nursery walls. Once we decided we (I) wanted a nursery, I found myself looking into paint companies, their products, their formulas and colors; sadly most of the mainstream companies are packed with some scary things.

For me it all started with some random article about VOC (Volatile  Organic Compound) which can release gases up to a year after applied, with that piece of information I spent days on the net, searching for more info and while there are not actual answers about how much exposure can be something to worry about, I'm not willing to risk my baby. In my search for a natural option I re-discovered an old type of paint, the milk paint which has been around for centuries and is made of milk, lime and non toxic. With a new option in mind, we needed more info and some reviews from other users, not a hard  task since in  the last years the milk paint is once again quite popular. In a society where safe and green seems to be a new trend, the milk paint offers an excellent solution to the standard oil based paints.

One of the most popular companies who manufacture, supply and retail milk paint is The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company Founded in 1974 by Charles Thibeau, who was a renowned craftsman. His interest in the re-creation of  early american colonial furniture and the use of natural products only, was his inspiration to try to recreate the old milk paint. Along with his interest on craftsmanship, Thibeau was also the founder of National Foundation of Environmental Control Inc. becoming a pioneer in the environmental protection area.

I'm so happy I was given the chance to test and review "The Old Fashion Milk Paint Company" products. The company sent me 2 and 1/2 gallons of safe paint to be used in my Baby's Nursery. The Safe paint is a new formula with the rich finish from the old milk paint and the consistency of the commercial oil based paints. This version was designed exclusively for interior walls whereas the old version was more suitable for porous surfaces like masonry or raw wood, The Safe Paint is free of VOC,  HAP's, solvent, latex, mercury, lead, plastics, petroleum derived products, etc.

Most wall paints in the market are not safe for pregnant women and I wanted to be involved in every single stage of my baby's nursery, that was the main reason we wanted an organic, green and non toxic paint. My husband works in construction, but working with milk paint or any kind of paint soluble in water was a new experience for him, he was sorta worried, but after we watched the company's online video, where it shows how to mix the paint, we were totally ready to start, even my kitten Kami was part of this adventure. The mixing is really easy once you are sure about the water and paint proportions (Double or triple check this part).

While I wanted really bad to participate in the actual painting my legs and my bump didn't agree with me, but I was able to sit in the middle of the room and talk with my hubby all the way. First we were talking about the paint texture and consistency and how easy or difficult it was to apply. My husband thinks it has a great consistency glides on the walls without drips or streaks, it's not too runny nor too thick when it's mixed right, it took us 1 hour to have the nursery done, the funny part is as soon as the nursery was completely done the first wall we painted was almost totally dry. We also learned to prepare small batches of paint at a time, we had a quarter ready after the first coat and 3 hours later the paint had a different texture (more thicker) my husband fixed it by adding a little extra water.

One of the hardest parts was choosing the color the company sent me this beautiful brushstroke with the 20 different shades and we liked 2 or 3 but decided the soft and creamy yellowish color was perfect for the bedding colors I had purchased before. The color we choose was buttermilk and after the first coat it looked perfect, 3 hours after my husband did the first coat we were ready for the second one, which was even easier and was done so fast we barely noticed it, there was no fumes or nasty smells with the milk paint, so many people warned me about this strong ammonia smell and while there was a smell it was not strong or overpowering and it was there only for the first 2 days, after that time it was completely gone.

  10. I love what you did with your little girls room! I also love how safe it is. I was so scared to paint my boys room when they were little that I just never did. :( Wish I would have known about this paint then. I'll be sure to share with my friends with little kids. :)

  11. What a healthy option instead of all the VOC's in the regular paints on the market. This is great especially for kids rooms.

  12. That's really scary about the length of time VOC's can leak out. This is a much better way to go.

  15. I really like the color you chose for the nursery. When i had my daughter- we had a nursery but we didn't really customize it since my ex husband was in a career that made us move a few times (not military). I am single now and in my late 30s but if I were to have another child (even adopt!), I would use this paint. It sounds great!

  23. It is nice to know that there are safe paint alternatives out there. We kept postponing on repainting our house because I was worried about my kids inhaling it. I now know what to get and use for my children bedrooms. Thanks for giving us awareness.

  24. Very interesting article about paint. I never knew about "VOC" I painted my son's room while I was pregnant, so I guess he got all the bad stuff in the paint. I wish I would have known about milk paint back then.

  26. That's cool, never knew there was such a thing, we're doing our walls with the paint so if the kids wrote on it, it would wipe right off.. haha that last longer in a house with 4 kids.
