I read the book series some time ago, and as I watch the films in this series, things pop up that trigger memories. I never saw the original movies, but I have seen both parts 1 and 2 of this remake. I want part 3 to be made. I know we have a confirmed date now, but we’ve had that with other movies that were later scrapped, and I hope this isn't the case.
The movie is so long, but it allows for so much world-building and storytelling that could never fit in a 90-minute movie. You see the relationship between Chani and Paul grow and change, and Lady Jessica becomes the Reverend Mother. So many other characters are introduced who ultimately play a part in the path Paul takes to achieve his destiny.
His mother's pregnancy wasn't exactly hidden, but it wasn't put forward either. When she becomes the Reverend Mother and they discover it, they react as if it's a bad thing. I don't think the Reverend Mothers are supposed to give birth to children due to passing on the magic of the Mother. I have no guarantee this is true, but it's what it implied.
This movie has changed my mind on Timothée Chalamet. I previously did not enjoy his acting, but this changed my perspective. He showed skills in bringing this character to life that I did not expect. I feel like he could end up surprising us with his skills as they continue to grow.
There is a lot of focus on the religions of the different people here, and it is a driving part of the story. In some ways, it reminds me of a mixture of different modern religions—like a people grasping for something to believe in after so much has changed in the universe. There is technology, but no computers or signs of the internet, so it's a weird mix of technology and no technology at the same time.
When Paul drinks the Water of Life, he seems to change so much. He had already previously been very intuitive, but this changes that 100-fold. I did, however, hate the pain in Chani's eyes when he cast her aside for the princess.
I don't know what will come for us with Dune 3, but I can't wait to see it. What was your favorite or least favorite part of the movie?
