  14. When I was a little girl, I walked 3 miles to the store. We had just moved from Arizona to California. We didn't have much money and were living in a motel room. I had been really sick for months. I guess the stress of the last minuted change got to me. Anyway, the store was a long ways away, across the freeway and I had to cut through a graveyard. My mother's birthday is just before mother's day and we hadn't been able to get her anything. I was determined we get her something for mother's day to make certain she felt special. I pooled money from my brothers and bought a cup that said "I love Mom," filled it with M&Ms and tied a balloon to it. My mother got home while I was away and picked me up on my walk back. It's still one of her favorite memories because I worked so hard to make something happen to let her know she was appreciated.
