Soda Stream Take Two

Soda Stream Take Two
Hey guys, we've got another review for you on the Soda Stream products.  This one is the Soda Stream Source and the starter kit retails for $129.99 in plastic and $149.99 for the metal version.  I know Miss Ruby was excited to get her Soda Stream Jet but was let down on the performance.  My boyfriend on the other hand knows many people he works with that have and use a Soda Stream on a frequent basis so he decided he wanted us to get one.  I decided okay if we're going to spend a lot of money on a soda maker we're going to get the better version we saw at Target which was the Source since it has LED lights showing how much carbonation you're getting instead of just guessing and it looked like a sturdier model than the Jet.

Right away we had problems.  The bottle wouldn't get a good enough seal when locking it into place so you'd get about half the carbonation you needed and then it would start to screech where the CO2 was leaking out.  We eventually figured out if you just pump the lever instead of holding it down it seemed to help get enough carbonation into the water to make a soda.

The next issue we had was that you really don't know how much of the syrup to use.  There IS a line indicator on the inside of the cap to measure but with a lot of the flavors it just doesn't taste right.  Like you either have too little flavoring or too much.  At this point you're wasting the CO2 and the syrup just to get the taste right.  Now I drink diet soda almost exclusively, so once I found a concentration of syrup that worked for me I didn't think their Diet Dr. Pete or generic Coke Zero was all that bad.  My boyfriend however kept telling me anything he tried always had a funny taste to it and tasted like a diet drink.  I thought he was crazy because he swore what he was making was mislabeled and was really a diet drink.  So I tasted the regular Dr. Pete he had made and told him there is no way that's diet because I can taste the sugar in it.  Trust me, I've been drinking diet drinks so long I definitely know the difference.  But I did notice something off that I probably wouldn't have noticed in my diet drinks because the artificial sweetener sometimes leaves an odd after taste that I'm used to by now.  But his drink was bitter.  You can actually taste the CO2.  If any of you have ever had the misfortune to taste carbonated water without flavoring you know what I'm talking about, just fizzy and bitter as hell.  So the carbonation was making the soda taste bitter.

Boyfriend was frustrated about spending all this money on the Source and the extra bottles and the syrups etc and was talking to people at work one night that had always said they loved their Soda Stream.  When he brought up the bitter after taste of the CO2 the all the people that were making arguments for why he shouldn't return the Soda Stream seemed to have an epiphany, and they all agreed that "Yeah it does kind of taste funny but I thought it was just me."

Needless to say we took back the Soda Stream Source.  It was a huge disappointment, now we're stuck with all these bottles of syrup we spent money on and can't use.  If you're thinking about getting a Soda Stream, DON'T!  Save your money and buy a few cases of actual soda.

    1. I thought so too for the price tag. But we just couldn't get past the bitter aftertaste the CO2 left in the soda. Unfortunately that's going to be an issue with any of the Soda Stream products no matter how expensive they are. :(

  2. Wow! I am so glad to have read this important post today. I have never heard anyone say that they did not like their Soda Stream. I am glad to know the truth that this soda maker does not work. I will just keep buying the soda at the grocery store. I always wondered if this thing worked. Glad to know now about it before I buy it. It is expensive!

    1. Yes Karen, it's very expensive for a product if you end up not being happy with it. For people that don't mind the bitter after taste or don't have any issues w/ the model they purchase I CAN see it saving them quite a bit of money but for my family it just didn't work out.
